Review

𝘈 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘴, is a dark tale of Beck Keverich, the son of a famous german pianist Ida Magdalena Keverich. Beck’s mother is no longer playing piano because of her stroke rehabilitation. Since then, her goal in life is to make her son into a younger version of herself so that the world doesn’t forget her name and her genius playing skills. She always physically abuses him for never being a perfect pianist. But still, Beck doodles his own compositions inside of his head. He has a head full of his own music that no one else seems to care about. He wants to cut off his hands so that he can’t play anymore, but at the same time he wants his mother to say well done, and searches for her approval. He wants to be the best brother he can be to his 5 year old little sister Joey, and buy her chocolates daily. He always wants a friend. And because of this, he finds August, the sunny girl who never wears shoes, and who brings confidence to Beck and helps him to unlock his own music. August is the safest place Beck has, because he wants to be uncountable at times, to feel possibilities. After playing a thousand wrong notes, Beck can finally make his Keverich name shine because of August.

Character Analysis

𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙠’𝙨 𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 is the most violent character I’ve ever seen. I hate the way she tries using her son to make her own dreams come true. It was the most heart-wrenching cruelty to see. Yet, I also came to like that strong, addressing aspect about her. I found that 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙠 is one of the most precious boys in fiction. He is the sweetest elder brother ever. Meanwhile, 𝙅𝙤𝙚𝙮 is the most adorable little thing I’ve ever seen, which makes me want to take her into my lap and treat her with lots of chocolate bars. When I read the line “𝘑𝘰𝘦𝘺’𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘦 - 𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘫𝘶𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳, 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘬𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘨𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘴”- tbh, my heart started aching and I wanted to jump into the pages of the book to hug her for hours. And, of course, the character 𝘼𝙪𝙜𝙪𝙨𝙩 is the ray of sunshine within this dark tale. I loved the relationship between August and Beck. It was pure and bright.⠀

Overall, I truly loved the writing style of this book. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰, 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 one's 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵.
